Next Stop Mars:

It would appear that the Russians agree with... well pretty much everyone as to the potential to send humans to Mars anytime soon. Yuri Koptev of the Russian Space Agency states that Bush's plan is plainly not feasible for several reasons. The main reason is Bush's contention that the Americans will build a ship capable of servicing the space station, go to the moon, and go to Mars. The Russians feel that this would be a serious mistake as each of these missions is quite different and would require different ships. The Russians feel that the real reason for this ambitious plan has mostly to do with gaining popularity for Bush in the next election.

It would be great to see humans go to Mars. However any serious plan would have to come about as the result of long term planning and research, not from the political aspirations of one whose future in politics seems quite limited as a result of all the recent falsehoods.
