The good news is the new spirit of co-operation among the fisherman, producers, and the National Oceanic Institute in an attempt to save the whales. It is these types of efforts which will in the long run pay the big dividends. The bad news is two-fold. On the one front, New Zealand has discovered several foreign species in their waters with the resulting threat to the native species. Another spot of bad news is the loss of the Eurospace satellite which would have begun mapping the true state of the global ice packs. This is a serious setback to efforts to understand what is going on and properly address the issues.
